Liberal Councillor for Silverton, Cllr Jenny Roach stands alone to reject a 23% increase in Councillor allowances.
Jenny was the only Mid Devon Councillor to vote against the motion to increase the councillor allowances by 23%. Speaking in the council chamber Jenny said, “in my election address, I promised that I would take no perks, I consider a 23% rise in allowances to be a perk, I cannot and will not go back to them and say that I voted for this rise. If the allowances need to go up then they should be raised just before an election and not seven months after, but no one has the courage to do that.”
Speaking after the vote, Jenny said, “I made a promise to the people of Silverton, I will not break that promise. People in my ward are suffering real hardship, many have problems paying their council tax, some have lost their jobs and others are struggling to cope with price rises whilst their wages remain static. To spend £50k over and above what was spent last year is frankly insensitive and irresponsible. How can anyone ask staff to take cuts and set this sort of example themselves?”
