George WhiteCouncillor George White

First elected in 1983 as a district councillor, George achieved an incredible 46% swing to take his seat from the Labour Party (with a majority of 19) and give Scotland its 1st Liberal Council.

Following work commitments with IBM in the USA, George returned to politics in 1999 and won the Gourock seat (now Inverclyde West) from Labour. He has held the seat successfully since 1999 until the present day.

An active councillor in Scotland, George represents his Council on many outside bodies; these include being a Board member of Strathclyde Police Authority, a Board member of Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, the Chair of Water Safety and Accident Prevention in Scotland and the Chair of the Clyde Ferries User Group.

George has always maintained his liberal values and is delighted to join the Liberal Party; he believes that the Lib-Dems have sold their soul for a slice of the cake and that voters will desert them in their millions. The reversal in the Lib-Dem position on increasing VAT is a real kick in the teeth to the general public and their betrayal will not be forgotten. The policies of the Liberal Party are good and decent and honest and George believes that the future is bright, the future is orange.

Married with four daughters, a foster daughter and a foster son, George intends to stand for the Liberal Party in Argyll & Bute in the Scottish parliamentary elections in May 2011.
