Six candidates will contest next months local Council elections under the banner of the Liberal Party it has been announced.

The Liberal Party exists to build a Liberal Society in which every citizen shall possess liberty, property and security and none shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. Its chief care is for the rights and opportunities of the individual, and in all spheres it sets freedom first.

Today David Wood, Secretary of the South Tyneside Liberal Association said: “When the Liberals merged with the bulk of the SDP in the late 1980s a group of Liberals refused to enter into the alliance and wanted to keep alive the Liberal Party cause. Although it has only a small national base at the moment, it has a proud history of progressive action and I am proud to stand as a candidate for them. Many local Liberal Democrats are annoyed that nationally their leaders have joined a coalition Government with the Tories, now is their opportunity to return to their political roots and come home to the true Liberal Party.”

Former Liberal Democrat David Selby will stand in Biddick and All Saints against the Mayor, Tom Piogtt; new candidates will contest Beacon and Bents, Westoe, West Park and Harton whilst  David Wood, will contest the Horsley Hill ward, currently held by Council Leader Iain Malcolm.

Mr Wood continued: “I think given we have only been formed a few weeks, to be able to field candidates in six wards is a remarkable achievement. We intend to seek candidates for the 18 wards across South Tyneside for May 2012 elections with the aim of fielding candidates at the next General Election in South Shields and Jarrow but for now we will concentrate on seeking to build support in the five wards we are contesting in this Mays election.”

The Liberal Party is also urging residents to vote YES to AV in the referendum also being held on May 5th. “It is important that every vote counts – that isn’t the case under the current First Past the Vote System.”

President of the national Liberal Party, Steve Radford said: “I am delighted that a new Branch of the Liberal Party has been formed on South Tyneside. I am looking forward to visiting the area and meeting the new members and campaigning with them to secure the election of Liberal Councillors in the area.”

Mr Wood is urging anyone interested in joining the Liberal Party to contact him on: 07950483675.
